Lorelai's Tumor Survival Story

Lorelai Walking in the morning sun before her big surgery

Meet Lorelai (A.k.a. Rawry"): The brave cat who inspires Rawry Pet Products.

šŸ›‘ Content Warning: Surgery, Tumor, Recovery šŸ›‘

First, let us share the best news: Lorelai is doing great! Sheā€™s been so brave, and weā€™re incredibly proud of her. But her journey hasnā€™t been easy. Late last year, we discovered a tumor in her lower jawā€”a diagnosis that changed everything.

The Diagnosis: A Tumor in Lorelai's Jaw

When we first learned about Lorelaiā€™s tumor, we were heartbroken and scared. To safely remove the tumor, Lorelai had to undergo a life-changing surgery to remove her entire lower jaw, sparing only one tooth. It was a massive decision, but it was necessary to give her the best chance at a healthy, happy life.

Surgery and Recovery: A Brave Fight

Lorelaiā€™s surgery lasted about five hours. That night was the most difficult of both of our lives. She spent the night at the vet, and while they assured us she was being well cared for, the house felt so empty without her. First thing the next morning, we were there to bring her home. Seeing her brave little face gave us hope.

Her recovery wasnā€™t without challenges. A week after surgery, she needed stitches fixed, but luckily that was a quick visit, and she was able to rest at home afterward. Every small setback made us worry, but Lorelaiā€™s resilience amazed us at every turn.

The Waiting Game: Tumor-Free and Cancer-Free

One of the hardest parts of this journey was waiting for the biopsy results. For two agonizing weeks, we didnā€™t know whether the tumor was cancerous. The thought of further treatment or a grim prognosis hung over us. When the results finally came back, we got the news we had been hoping for: the tumor was non-cancerous, and thereā€™s almost no chance of recurrence. Relief doesnā€™t even begin to describe how we felt.

Learning to Eat Again: A Milestone Moment

One of our biggest fears was whether Lorelai would be able to eat after surgery. Statistics showed that one in ten cats who undergo this procedure never eat again, requiring a feeding tube. This was our nightmare scenario.

When we brought her home, the vet mentioned she had shown interest in food but hadnā€™t eaten yet. That night, Lorelai approached her food bowl and began to eat. It was a moment of pure joy. I sobbed as I watched her take her first meal in her new life. That small act of bravery showed us that she would thrive despite the odds.

Daily Challenges: Medications and Care

Post-surgery, Lorelai needed multiple medications, including antibiotics, steroids, appetite stimulants, and pain relief meds. Administering these medications was no easy task. Without a lower jaw, it was challenging to find ways to ensure she took what she needed to heal. It wasnā€™t easy for either of us, but every scratch and struggle was worth it to see her improve day by day.

Gratitude for the Veterinary Team

We owe so much to the incredible Dental and Oral Surgery team at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital. Their care, expertise, and compassion saved Lorelaiā€™s life. Every visit reinforced how much they truly cared about her comfort and well-being. Lorelai, of course, charmed everyone at the clinic and quickly became a favorite patient.

A Financial and Emotional Challenge

Lorelaiā€™s surgery and recovery came at a costā€”around $13,000. It was a significant expense, but there is nothing we wouldnā€™t do for her. Supporting a pet through such a journey is not only a financial challenge but an emotional one as well. For those who want to support us, shopping with us or sharing our story and products means the world.
